  • Once an application is submitted, applicants should wait to hear from the department. The applicant will be sent an acknowledgement their application was received. Applicants should not contact the department regarding the status of their application.  If an application is accepted the applicant will be notified to report for the administration of a written exam and Physical Ability Test (PAT).  Applicants will be given a  minimum of two weeks to prepare for the exam and test.
  • The written exam is the National Firefighter Selection Inventory (NFSI) by I/O Solutions, Inc. Two and a half hours are allotted for the written exam.  A description of the exam and study materials can be found HERE.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to prepare for the exam. Prior experience has shown applicants who are not adequately prepared will not do well on the exam.
  • Applicants are required to obtain a medical release signed by a medical professional OR submit a current (within 1 year) NFPA 1582 compliant physical to participate in the PAT.  An overview of the PAT is provided to assist in preparing for the test. The overview should be given to the examining medical professional, so they understand what the test involves. The release form and overview can be found HERE.  Applicants will not be allowed to take the PAT without a signed medical release or acceptable NFPA 1582 compliant physical.
  • Applicants who successfully complete the written exam and PAT may be invited to a 1-hour panel interview. Applicants will be given a minimum of one week’s notice of their interview date and time. Applicants arriving late will be removed from further consideration.
  • Applicants who successfully complete the interview will be considered a candidate for employment.
  • Applicants may progress through the testing and interview phases of the employment process individually or in groups. Applicants should be prepared for delays between phases if applicants are grouped. Applicants will be notified of their status after each phase.
  • When a final candidate is chosen, a job offer will be extended to that candidate. If the candidate accepts the offer they will complete the last phase of the employment process – a psychological screening, a criminal background check, and a drug test. These will typically occur within one to two weeks of acceptance of a job offer.
  • The psychological screening evaluates the candidates overall mental state and suitability for the demands and rigors of firefighting.
  • If a final candidate successfully completes the last phase of the employment process they will be notified, and a start date will be negotiated. They will be assigned to a shift and begin their probationary period on their start date.
  • If a final candidate fails any portion of the last phase, another candidate may be chosen to complete the last phase of the employment process. If there are no additional candidates, the application period will remain open until a candidate completes the employment process.
